Rahm Emanuel, the White House chief of staff, is resigning to run for mayor of Chicago, sources familiar with his plans said today.
President Obama will announce Emanuel's departure at an event in the Rose Garden on Friday, according to a person close to Emanuel.
Emanuel is expected to leave the White House immediately and open his campaign to succeed longtime Mayor Richard Daley. One of Obama's senior aides, Pete Rouse, likely will replace Emanuel as chief of staff, at least on a temporary basis.
