I saw a movie today that left me feeling good inside, made me laugh out loud and showed a "genre of film" that could truly entertain a mass audience. ( the older skewed audience at the Laemmle ROYAL THEATER In Santa Monica I was with today, loved it) It's an old fashioned style film with a modern day storyline. The fabulous Lainie Kazan, the hysterical Bruce Vilanch and gorgeous Carmen Electra star in this 60's styled comedy with a great supporting cast.
Everyone that knows me, know I write how I feel .If I like something, I like it and if I don't, I tell you. I don't try to find some Ethereal reason for the plot- the scene and the motivation. (yeah Stella Adler and Stanislavski would have had me removed from their classes). I like to be entertained and I know most of us poo poo most of the stuffy lame critics anyway. Here's the plot: Thirtysomething Nelson Hirsh (John Lloyd Young) lives with partner Angelo (Jai Rodriguez) but remains in the closet to his family. His mom Shirley (Kazan) and Father, Martin (Saul Rubinek) want to fix him up with a nice Jewish girl. Isn't that every Jewish mothers Mission? After mistaking Carmen Electra as his Fiance-( who plays a centerfold model) Nelson is forced to come out to his family. They decide to make their relationship legal and adopt a child. What ensues is a family dealing with acceptance and an end message that no matter who you care to be with, Love is love. Period!
Director/writer/producer Evgeny Afineesky has a big hit on his hand. Now we just need a studio to distribute here in the United States so everyone can see a movie with a smart gay themed plot that doesn't center around gratuitous sex. Yes I said it! Finally, A smart funny cute heartwarming little movie that shows a real gay relationship without the glorified thumping sound track sex scene. ( you know what I'm talking about)
I for one am dumbfounded by so many "gay" producers who feel it is some right of passage to HAVE to add some gratuitous sex scene to sell a film. If you're writing is good- your cast is great you don't need shock to get attention.
I really hope OY VEY! MY SON IS GAY makes it to a theater soon. It deserves to be seen. A heart and soul filled little film with a smart message for today's headlines.
OY VEY...see this film and spread the word..LOVE is LOVE
